A ton of refrigeration is 12,000 Btu/h, the heat that melts one short ton of ice in 24 hours. It measures cooling output, not electric input; divide electric kW by tons to get kW/ton.

Boiler horsepower (33,475 Btu/h, about 9.81 kW) is a different unit from mechanical horsepower (about 745.7 W). Motor nameplates use mechanical horsepower.
