Wind energy from speed bins calculator

Apply the cubic wind model separately to each below-limit speed bin before summing energy; cubing the mean speed loses the speed distribution. The 0.40 capture factor is a screening assumption.

Units
E=0.4×K×A×(v13×h1+v23×h2)1000E = \frac{0.4 \times K \times A \times \left(v_{1}^{3} \times h_{1} + v_{2}^{3} \times h_{2}\right)}{1000}

Worked example

Given

  • KK = 0.00508 W/(ft²·mph³)
  • AA = 600 ft²
  • v1v_{1} = 11 mph
  • h1h_{1} = 1,400 h
  • v2v_{2} = 19 mph
  • h2h_{2} = 600 h
E=0.4×0.00508×600×(113×1400+193×600)1000≈7,289E = \frac{0.4 \times 0.00508 \times 600 \times \left({11}^{3} \times 1400 + {19}^{3} \times 600\right)}{1000} \approx 7{,}289
